Sketch to Costume

2022 - current

This page contains some of Luna’s sketches that she made for theater costumes and her own costume series before starting manufacture, as well as photos from fittings and the final stage photos taken during performances. This showcases Luna’s process of designing, developing, and manufacturing costumes from the ground up.

This page includes images from the sketch to costume process for the following shows:

Visa to Dreamland FATAL THINGS

Pinocchio the Musical Onegin: In Our Own Words

Aleksey Aleksandrovich The Cabal of Hypocrites

Visa to Dreamland, 2025

A passion project for Luna, Visa to Dreamland was imagined and created by her in collaboration with artist Maidibor. The costumes of Merman, Forest Mn and Baba Yaga however are fully the product of Luna’s imagination. Working mostly with recycled materials, Luna had to change some things from the sketch to the final product, but the whimsical nature of the characters was preserved, as in the original concept.

Pinocchio the Musical, 2024

Luna designed and manufactured more than 150 costumes for this larger than life show. It is important to note that Pinocchio played with two casts, so most costumes either had to be doubled up, or designed in a way that would fit two different actors. Many of these costumes had to be suitable for quick changes, and there was a wide selection of ensemble costumes for group scenes.

Aleksey Aleksandrovich, 2024

Although this show had a much smaller cast, the costumes were quite technically complex. Specifically the costume of the main character, Aleksey Karenin had to physically expand on stage. Luna’s solution was to custom-order an inflatable insert for the costume, and the outer shell of the costume itself went through several trial versions before Luna arrived at the final product. Other notable costumes from this show include a removable set of “armor” made from satin and stiffened felt inserts, and architectural veiled headpieces.

FATAL THINGS, 2022

Another passion project for Luna, FATAL THINGS required two very detailed costumes of Sirin Bird and Mermaid that were used in several performances and a short film.

Onegin: In Our Own Words, 2022-23

These original sketches only somewhat reflect the final costumes that appeared on stage in Dmitry Krymov’s Onegin when it premiered as a workshop at LaMaMa ETC in 2022. All costume items for these four characters were thrifted, and altered specifically to fit the complex prop nd movement needs of the show, so in the end only the layering effect remained from the original concept.

The Cabal of Hypocrites, 2024

Although this show never made it to the stage, Luna developed a costume collection based on the well-known Italian characters of Comedia del Arte for this play, the plot of which is based on the life of Moliere. All characters are coupled, like the characters of Comedia del Arte: Pierrot and Pierette, Harlequin and Columbine, the Beggar and the Fool, the Two Lovers. Only Moliere collects within his costume - half his own clothing, and half costume for the play within a play - traits and fabric patches from all members of his troupe. And the king - Louis XIV - mirrors Moliere, but bereft of his bright colors, a blank and empty reflection.
